What is Diathermy

Diathermy uses high-frequency electric current to produce heat deep inside a targeted tissue. It can reach areas as deep as two inches beneath the skins surface. It was created by Nikola Tesla, an American engineer and inventor in 1891.

He saw that heat resulted from irradiation of tissue with high-frequency alternating current. K.F. Nagelschmidt, a German physician, saw the potential for the medical field and in 1909 coined the term diathermy, meaning heating through.

The diathermy machine does not apply heat directly to the body. Instead, the waves generated by the machine allow the body to generate heat from within the targeted tissue.

What Can Diathermy Treat?

Diathermy can treat an array of conditions and ailments. Such as:

  • Sinus congestion or sinus infections
  • Coughing
  • Lung issues such as: Asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia
  • Otitis Media
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Diverticulitis
  • Muscle sprains
  • Chronic low back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Traumatic injuries

Proper application and tuning are required for diathermy. The patient should feel only a comfortable heat. A towel is used to avoid localized heat concentration.
