Why Co-Q10 is Beneficial

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an important antioxidant for the body. Antioxidants protect the body’s cells from damage and helps with metabolism. Levels of CoQ10 decrease as we age and it is found in meat, fish and broccoli.

CoQ10 has been shown to lower blood pressure slightly and treat many heart conditions. As well as, it has been shown to treat migraines and diabetes. When taking a CoQ10 supplement, due to the antioxidant property, it has been shown to help reduce the damage done from taking many prescription medications.

What is an Antioxidant

An antioxidant fights against free radicals in the body. Free radicals cause damage to the body and are significantly increased by a poor diet, alcohol, smoking, air pollution, and pesticides (read What is organic?)

When you don’t have enough antioxidants in the body to combat the number of free radicals, you get a build up of “oxidative stress”. Oxidative stress has been thought to be the cause of memory loss, autoimmune disorders, cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and wrinkles.

Antioxidants are found in many fruits and vegetables, vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, Omega 3s, CoQ10, as well as others. In the standard American diet, fast food, processed foods, crappy carbs, and sweets outweigh healthy food. Just look at the obesity rates in the US, 39.8% in 2016!

Per HealthyPeople2020– In 2008, 107 million Americans—almost 1 out of every 2 adults age 18 or older—had at least 1 of 6 reported chronic illnesses:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Ubiquinone vs Ubiquinol

CoQ10 has two forms. Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol. The body carries both “varieties” and they can convert to each other by gaining or losing an electron. When deciding to buy a supplement, I suggest buying the Ubiquinol version.

Although ubiquinone supplements are less expensive, Ubiquinol has an increased half-life. So less frequent dosing and lower doses are needed for the same effect of that in ubiquinone supplements.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic care looks at whole body health. When you see a chiropractor you should be concerned with how your body is functioning, rather than wanting to chase pains. Pain is a symptom of something that isn’t functioning properly. Whether it is from a misalignment of the spine, a vitamin deficiency, a food allergy or something else, chiropractors want to find out what the cause is.

If you have any questions on what chiropractic can help you with give me or a chiropractor near you a call! Chiropractic is very effective at managing pain, but all chiropractors are wanting to keep you healthy and functioning at the best you can! Think about putting chiropractic into your life as a lifestyle. (Which usually only consists of once a month adjustments, keeping your diet healthy and reaching all your personal lifestyle goals.)
