10 Alternatives to Halloween Candy

It’s that time of year again! Even though COVID has hit, kids still want to dress up and go trick or treating. In my hometown we are still doing downtown trick or treating, many trunk or treats and neighborhood door to door. (How many houses will have their lights on is a different story.)

Most people love going through their kids candy and picking out their favorites and taking a candy tax, but I simply take away most of their candy because its TERRIBLE for you! Yes let kids be kids, but pounds of candy is detrimental to your health. Childhood obesity is skyrocketing!!

1. Plastic skeletons

My daughter has recently gotten a green plastic skeleton from preschool and was over the moon about it. She even asked her teacher for a second one to give to her bubba. (How sweet!)

2. Bouncy balls

Bouncy balls can be so irritating bouncing around the house, but they are hours of fun. If you make it a game the kids can work on their hand eye coordination.

3. Stickers

My kids freak over any kind of stickers. Any holiday stickers are going to be a big hit with my family.

4. Coloring book

Keeping little things to occupy kids when they need to be quiet is always nice. Little coloring books are a fantastic alternative to candy (and they help mom out).

5. Glow in the dark anything

Bracelets, necklaces, vampire teeth! We bought a bunch of glow in the dark sticks and had a glow party one night and blasted the music real loud while we danced around like crazy! Memories I will always cherish. The kids now have an obsession with glow in the dark items.

6. Witch fingers

These are so fun! You can buy a 10 pack for $1. If you only hand out one per kid that’s only 10 cents per kid!

7. Honey sticks

Still sweet but much healthier for you!

8. Organic gummy bears or fruit snacks

Adults and kids alike like fruit snacks. I only like the kind free of dyes, artificial flavors and added junk! Your body will also thank you!

9. Mini mazes

I’m a huge fan of puzzles! Anything to get your brain working and trying to solve a problem is fantastic. Work the brain rather than deteriorate it with addictive sugar.

10. Mini popcorn bags

Popcorn is a fun alternative. There are superior brands now for popcorn. Check out ” Top 30 best popcorns“. Not all popcorn is created equal.

Start reading labels. You would be surprised on where artificial colors, dyes and soy are hidden! There are other *better* alternatives for kids during the Halloween season. A little candy isn’t bad, moderation is key! It’s super easy to get a serious sugar addiction problem.

Doctors of Chiropractic can help teach you how to read labels or hold you accountable for your sugar and candy intake. Call us or a chiropractor around you for a consultation on how to become a healthier you! Diet, exercise and spinal health are the essentials to a long healthy life.
