Peppermint Oil

I’m sure you have heard of essential oils. They are becoming very well known. Many people don’t know how to use essential oils or don’t know what is good for which condition. There are many brands out there, but they all sell a variation of the same oils.

All companies have the about the exact same single oils, but when it comes to the company blends is where they are going to differ. They can even have the same blends named different things. I’m not going to go into the different companies, but I do want to discuss what benefits peppermint oil has.

Benefits

Peppermint is actually a hybrid mint. It is a cross between water mint and spearmint. It has a refreshing, cool, minty, herbal aroma. Records of the use of mint plants for medicinal purposes go all the way back to the times of Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Due to the oil having menthol and menthone in it, it has several beneficially properties.

The oil can be applied topically or diffused. Some will ingest the oil in capsules or cook with the oils in food. Each way has its own benefits and precautions. Some things that peppermint can help with is:

  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • nausea (applied behind ear)
  • other digestive issues
  • common cold
  • headaches
  • relief from itching
  • muscle pain
  • congestion and breathing issues
  • soothe feelings of irritability
  • reduce nervous tension
  • boosts energy
  • helps suppress appetite and promote feeling of fullness

Peppermint is common in flavoring agent in foods, mouthwashes, toothpastes, soap and cosmetic products. Peppermint oil also has mild antimicrobial properties.

The essential oils of Peppermint are found in cells on the underside of the leaves and are collected through the process of steam distilling the fresh or partially dried plant leaves. Peppermint will retain stability and have a prolonged shelf life if stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
