Whole Body Aches and Pains?

I have had an extreme number of patients lately come in complaining of entire body aches and pains. They all have been “diagnosed” with Fibromyalgia.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is categorized as a widespread pain and can be accompanied by fatigue, sleep, headaches, TMJ issues, irritate bowel syndrome, memory and mood issues. There are 18 points on the body that are considered the diagnosing points for Fibromyalgia. To be diagnosed 11 of the 18 points must be tender.

Pain must be above and below the waist and affect both sides of the body.

Symptoms sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event. It typically will present more in women than in men.

Chiropractic Care and Fibromyalgia

When you notice any symptoms (pain) in your body, the symptoms are only 10% of what your body is going through. Symptoms will always comes last! The other 90% of what your brain is impacting or noticing is change in your posture, sending inflammation into your body for protection and sending stress hormones into your body.

Your brain has two areas that directly affect your body. The cerebellum is what is happening in the body and the cortex is what is suppose to be happening. When the two don’t agree on the information being received, then the cortex sends out inflammation, which causes postural changes (or subluxations and muscle tension).

Every single spinal adjustment directly affects the information going to the brain. The brain then gets “good” information from the adjustment and sends out healing into the body. In chronic pain conditions (such as fibromyalgia) calming down the nervous system is key. This is done with chiropractic adjustments and diet and exercise.

Adding anti-inflammatory spices such as ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and cloves will help with pain and inflammation. As well as, adding anti-inflammatory foods to your diet such as, extra virgin olive oil, bell peppers, cherries, grapes, green tea, avocados, broccoli, fish and berries. Excluding inflammatory foods from your diet is just as important. So stay away from sugar, gluten, alcohol, vegetable oil, and dairy (to name a few!)
